Transformation of the façade appearance
Transformation of the façade appearance in an open high basement façade
Existing parapet sections beneath the windows were removed to create glazed elements extending down to floor level. The façade had been renovated approximately 20 years earlier and fitted with larger window sections, which resulted in a number of cracks appearing in the façade.

Project Description
Situation
The façade wall, including the concrete parapet, acts as a stabilising element. This stabilising effect was not taken into account when the window sections were first altered, and since that renovation, the façade wall has exhibited significant cracking.
Solution
In the upcoming renovation, the client wished to remove the concrete parapet beneath the windows. Steel frames have been introduced to control horizontal stability, while the vertical load path continues to run through the façade wall.
The remaining concrete columns have a cross-section of 60 × 30 cm (unreinforced) and possess sufficient load-bearing capacity, but are to be strengthened in order to control cracking.
