Road reinforcement on Pi Margall Street in Barcelona
In July 2025, Barcelona’s iconic Pi Margall Street underwent a complete reconstruction due to extensive damage and deformation of its cobblestone surface. The existing cobblestones and the underlying concrete base were fully removed and replaced with a modern three-layer hot bituminous pavement system. This new structure includes a base course, S&P Glasphalt® G asphalt reinforcement, an intermediate course, and a wearing course. The integrated reinforcement significantly enhances the durability and extends the service life of the roadway.

Project Description
Problem
The cobblestone pavement exhibited noticeable deformation and displacement, accompanied by a loss of fine aggregate material.
Solution
To address the severe deterioration of Pi Margall Street, the entire road surface—including both the cobblestone pavement and the underlying concrete base—was completely demolished. In its place, a robust multilayer asphalt system was installed, featuring reinforcement with S&P Glasphalt® G. This advanced solution is specifically designed to withstand the demands of heavy traffic and urban wear, ensuring a significantly extended service life for this vital thoroughfare in the heart of Barcelona.
