Project Description
Situation
Successful Asphalt Reinforcement on Denmark’s E45 Motorway
As part of the planned rehabilitation works, this phase focused on enhancing the load-bearing capacity and durability of an 11-kilometer stretch near Hjallerup. Led by the Danish Road Directorate, the project was designed to ensure an improved driving experience while significantly extending the road’s service life, minimising the need for future closures and repairs for many years.
Solution
A Sustainable and Durable Solution
The solution for this critical stretch involved the installation of S&P Glasphalt® G, a high-performance asphalt reinforcement grid. This was followed by the application of a specialised climate-friendly asphalt wearing course (KVS). The KVS layer reduces rolling resistance, thereby lowering fuel consumption - a clear demonstration of the project’s emphasis on sustainability. The combination of S&P Glasphalt® G and the sustainable wearing course not only improves the road’s durability but also contributes to resource efficiency by prolonging the service life of the road.
Managing Challenges for Long-Term Benefits
While the installation and asphalt overlay were expertly coordinated by Peab Asfalt, a temporary road closure was unavoidable. Traffic was diverted to the northbound carriageway, with reduced speed limits in place to ensure safety. Despite this short-term inconvenience, the completed works have provided users with a modern, durable and environmentally friendly road surface that will serve them for years to come.
