Reinforcement of a car park slab - OPUS residence - La Rochelle, France

A residential underground car park was suffering from cracks and rising water. S&P supported the company that was to carry out the work, proposing a viable solution, from the supply of materials to the training of the site team.

Situation

The poor positioning of the upper reinforcement in the structure meant that the building's structure was unable to withstand the forces caused by the osmotic buoyancy of the water table.

The top reinforcing bars of the slab were not at the right level and were therefore unable to perform their role of reinforcing the reinforced concrete slab in tension.

As the water table rose, cracks appeared, demonstrating the fragility of the structure. These cracks also allowed water to seep through, causing flooding inside the underground car park.

Solution

The solution chosen for the project?

Reinforce the structure using the S&P C-Laminate system. The advantage of this system is that it is quick and easy to install.

It is easy to install: saw cuts were made in the concrete, without disrupting the existing reinforcement, then the laminates were placed inside these grooves (Near surface mounted or NSM). Finally, the resin was then applied to bond the carbon laminates to the structure.
