Project Description
Situation
The causes of damage were assessed to be due to ASR (Alkaline Silica Reaction) resulting in corrosion, spalling and lack of reinforcement in existing column structures.
The solution was to utilise S&P C-Sheet 240 as carbon fibre reinforcement, with prior injection of cracks and reprofiling where there was spalling.
The columns were sandblasted and cleaned down before wrapping the columns with 2 and respectively 3 layers of S&P C-Sheet 240 (carbon fibre fabric). By wrapping the column with carbon fibre fabric, what is known as confinement of the concrete is created.
The whole project was completed in just 8-9 weeks without any lane closures on the E45 under the bridge. The speed limit during the installation was reduced by 10km/h for work safety reasons.
