Road reinforcement in La Rioja

The Autonomous Community of La Rioja undertook a project for the through-road crossing in the village of Cañas, where surface deterioration of the asphalt wearing course was clearly visible, with both transverse and longitudinal expansion joints of the old concrete slab pavement showing through. Therefore, the use of asphalt reinforcement was recommended to reinforce the asphalt layer to be placed over the existing concrete pavement in the section located along the village’s through-road. This recommendation is based on the need to mitigate reflection of expansion joints from the rigid pavement into the new asphalt layer.

Problem

The concrete pavement had expansion joints which, over time, tend to reflect through the upper asphalt layers, creating cracks that compromise the durability and comfort of the road. This phenomenon, known as crack reflection, can accelerate pavement deterioration and increase maintenance costs.

Solution

To mitigate the reflection of expansion joints from the concrete slabs, the installation of  S&P Glasphalt® G was proposed. This product is specifically designed to address such challenges, covering the full length and width of the intervention area. This ensures that the expansion joints will not reappear in the new asphalt layer.

Material

C60B3 TER type emulsion, S&P Glasphalt® G (1,450 m²) and hot bituminous mix with a thickness of 6 cm
