Residential road reinforcement - Vesterled - Tjæreborg, Denmark
S&P asphalt reinforcement grids can also be the perfect long term solution to combat cracking on residential roads. In this particular case S&P Carbophalt® G 200/200 was utilised on a project in the municpality of Esbjerg in Western Denmark.

Project Description
Situation
Vesterled is a residential road which had suffered many cracks due to age. The road also had a number of joints from service covers, in connection with the renovation of sewers.
Fatigue cracking in asphalt pavements can occur as a result of relaxation, when the asphalt becomes stiff and brittle with age. This results in a reduction in the flexibility of the asphalt, thus making it susceptible to damage in terms of deflection, temperature change and contraction.
Solution
In co-ordination with the municpality, S&P proposed to reinforce the road with S&P Carbophalt® G 200/200 under a 30 mm SMA wearing course to provide a long term durable solution, that would ultimately significantly reduce maintenance costs and resource use.
The solution was implemented and the entire road was reinforced to combat potential reflection cracking in the approximately 30 mm new wearing course.
Cost savings
For the purpose of LCC calculations the life expectancy of the reinforced wearing course was assumed to be approximately 24 years - which corresponds to the life expectancy of residential roads without damage to the sub-base.
The calculations show that after 24 years, the municipality will have saved approximately DKK 300,000 (in present day Danish kroner). The reinforcement is expected to be preserved by replacement of the wearing course after the 24 years, and further calculations based on the LCC model reveal that after 40 years savings for the municipality total at least 600,000 DKK (again based on present day Danish kroner).
Project tracking
In 2022, major cracks have been observed on connecting roads, which were repaired at the same time but without reinforcement. The crack openings are of the same nature as in the past and are in different directions. In comparison the section of road reinforced with S&P Carbophalt® G 200/200 remained in top condition as can be seen in the images below.
