Situation

As part of works carried out at Bordeaux–Mérignac Airport, S&P Reinforcement was specified by a partner design engineer for the reinforcement of a concrete trench for airfield lighting, located between two layers of GB-type asphalt.

Problem

This configuration presented a significant weak zone, due to the presence of two longitudinal joints created by the interface between the concrete trench and the adjacent asphalt layers. These structural discontinuities posed an increased risk of cracking and premature deterioration of the pavement, particularly in a highly trafficked airport environment.

Solution

In order to provide a durable solution to this issue, a carbon‑based reinforcement system utilising S&P Carbophalt® G was specified. This solution made it possible to effectively absorb mechanical stresses at the joint locations, limit the propagation of cracks and ensure structural continuity between the different pavement layers.

The carbon reinforcement therefore provided a high‑performance and long‑lasting solution for this sensitive area, helping to improve the overall durability of the structure while ensuring the safety and reliability of the airport’s airfield lighting infrastructure.
