Situation

S&P had the privilege of taking part in the innovative “Charge As You Drive” project, a dynamic inductive charging trial led by Vinci Construction on the A10 motorway. This pilot phase was carried out over a 1,500‑metre stretch of roadway, incorporating state‑of‑the‑art technology that enables electric vehicles to be recharged while in motion.

As the design of this pavement was non‑standard, due to the integration of charging coils directly within the structure, specific mechanical constraints were identified. In order to limit the premature appearance of cracks—particularly at structural joints—the implementation of a suitable reinforcement solution quickly proved essential to ensure the long‑term durability of the asset.

Solution

In close collaboration with Vinci Construction’s management, S&P Reinforcement proposed a comprehensive and high‑performance solution to strengthen this section of roadway. It was decided to install the S&P Glasphalt® G solution on the special self‑compacting asphalt layer covering the charging coils. This layer was then completed with a 4 cm structural asphalt layer, followed by a very thin 2.5 cm wearing course.

Thanks to state‑of‑the‑art manufacturing technology, S&P Reinforcement geogrids are flexible, open‑mesh and bitumen‑coated, allowing hot installation and achieving a high‑quality bond. These distinctive S&P features provide genuine reinforcement to the pavement, extending its service life and contributing to a sustainable development strategy.

The S&P Glasphalt® G solution was applied across the full width of the roadway using our mechanised installation equipment, greatly facilitating project execution.

Project follow‑up

Finally, S&P Reinforcement France remains in direct contact with Vinci Construction to ensure the technical monitoring of this research project. This trial, which carries major innovations for the mobility of tomorrow, is set to evolve and could be rolled out on a larger scale in the near future.
