Reinforcement of cantilevered concrete deck - Søsporten - Åarhus C, Denmark

Søsporten is a building originally constructed in 1936 for Aarhus rowing club. Aarhus Municipality decided that the building should be preserved and therefore a renovation project was developed with the re-use of existing materials. The project has been nominated for the Renover Award 2023.

Situation

On the exterior of the first floor, a cantilevered balcony runs along the entire gable. Due to the new construction with membrane and post-insulation, as well as decking and retrospective design requirements, the cantilevered porch had to be reinforced. Here, the existing clamping torque had to be increased to ensure the safety level of the load-bearing capacity. One of the challenges was that the main staircase to the first floor is located partly in the gable and the forces must be transferred to the load-bearing cantilevered deck. This means that a part of the cantilevered balcony entrance next to the stairwell is suspended.

Solution

To make up for the lack of capacity, the concrete deck needed to be reinforced at the gable end with the cantilevered deck and the carbon fibre solution was chosen as it does not add significant weight. As the building is also located in an aggressive maritime environment, carbon fibre also has the advantage of being a non-corrosive material.

S&P C-Laminate bonded with S&P Resin 220 HP on the top side, which had previously been levelled out with S&P Resin 230 HP, were used. The underside of the cantilevered deck outside the stairwell was reinforced with NSM solution, i.e. a solution where grooves are milled into the deck layer and carbon fibre rods are glued in. Carbon fibre rods S&P C-Rod with a diameter of 8 mm were used here together with adhesive type S&P Resin 220 HP.
