Structural reinforcement
The Carpintaria de São Lázaro operated as an industrial carpentry until the 1990s, having suffered a fire that put an end to its activity.
It is a building with a facade in the Art-Déco style, with large windows to the Rua de São Lázaro and magnificent views to the rear and on the roof terrace, to Graça and the Castle Hill.
It was in 2014 that, through a public tender, Lisbon City Council handed over the management of the space to the Cultural and Recreational Association of Carpentarias de São Lázaro. The work was executed with high standards of quality and architectural integration in the space. In fact, the boldness of integrating the reinforcement, using new high-tech materials, stands out, and it was deliberately left in plain sight, being a permanent and integral part of the exhibition, giving it a markedly stripped and industrial atmosphere. The work was fully completed in 2016.
The structure suffered damage due to an accidental fire and was intervened so as to restore its structural resistant capacity and adapt it to the new use and architecture.
The solution involved reinforcing slabs with carbon laminates in both directions and reinforcing columns by confinement with carbon fibre sheets.
