Situation

The reasons for crack propagation are that the HBB layer (cement stabilised gravel layer) has relaxed and this has led to crack formation. The asphalt layers harden and thus the asphalt cannot absorb the tensile stresses from the HBB layer. Other contributory factors are the thermal effects during the year and the traffic load from heavy vehicles.

Solution

The choice fell on reinforcement with S&P Carbophalt G 200/200 which proved to be an economically advantageous model and with a reduction in CO2 footprint. Calculations for the removal of the bumps alone show a reduction of between 300-600 tonnes over 20 years, with road users also benefiting in terms of reduced fuel consumption.
